The tour

- Images of the opening
The itinerario pedemontano pordenonese unwinds between the train stations of Montereale Valcellina and Budoia, for a distance of approximately 20 km, and skirts the slopes of the majestic Cavallo mountain range, between the beautiful yet busy West Piedmont provincial road and the Gemona-Sacile railway line. The route is over fairly level ground and it is not difficult.
It takes the visitor through an easy maze of roads and lanes, where urban stretches alternate with open countryside ones then it crosses or borders various towns and small villages characterised by typical rural-mountain architecture. Many are the places of interest from a landscape, architectonic and artistic point of view. For example, in the Montereale-Marsure section, worthy of notice are the hedge-enclosed fields that have maintained their original features or, towards the end of the itinerary, the San Tomè nature trail, at Dardago.
Also the historical and artistic sights are well worth a visit, like the archaeological areas of Montereale Valcellina or the numerous religious buildings strewn along the various stopping points of the route, which certainly add value to the cycling trip. The rural architecture of Friuli, which still bears traces of its ancient origins, can be admired in Cortina di Giais or Budoia and Dardago. The entire area covered by the route has so many naturalistic, cultural and historical resources that it was decided to set up an eco-museum called Ecomuseo delle Dolomiti Friulane “Lis Aganis", which comprises a number of "cells" or centres the objective of which is to exploit the local resources and help the visitor to get to know the territory.
The route follows a cycleway (with limited access to motor vehicles excluding tractors and the like), a country road (restricted traffic) and an urban road part of which is dedicated to cycle traffic or shared with other vehicles. The signs and features of the route guide the visitor unfailingly. Directions are also provided to help the visitor to get to towns and train stations or to take interesting alternative routes.
The route may be cycled either way, but the recommended itinerary described in this guide goes from Montereale Valcellina (starting at 298 m asl) to Budoia (arrival at 82 m asl) and it is quite pleasant given the slight and almost constant favourable downward slope.
The route has been broken down into 5 sections to help the visitor obtain a better understanding of the itinerary.
